VCAL
The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) sits alongside VCE as a senior secondary option for Victorian students in Year 11 and Year 12.
The VCAL’s flexibility enables students to undertake a study program that suits their interest and learning needs.
There are three levels of the VCAL - Foundation, Intermediate and Senior. A student must satisfactorily complete ten accredited units in order to achieve the VCAL, which can be made up of a mixture of VCE, VET, Further Education or specific VCAL units.
VCAL may be undertaken in either Year 11 or Year 12, or both.
The VCAL will provide an accredited program of studies in the following four compulsory strands:
- Literacy and numeracy (eg VCE English units, VCE Maths units).
- Work-related skills (eg VCAL Work Related Skills units).
- Industry-related skills (eg VET program at TAFE or school, School-based New Apprenticeship program)
- Personal development (eg VCAL Personal Development Skills units, Health & Human Development, Religious Education)
VCAL Pathways for Students
The VCAL will develop and extend pathways for young people from school:
- To further study at TAFE
- To employment
- To take up an apprenticeship or traineeship.
Successful completion of the VCAL will provide young people with skills that are important for life, work and further study as well as a VCAL Certificate and/or Statement of Attainment.
Assessment
Styles of assessment vary according to the units studied. Assessment in VCAL units is school-based; there are no exams. VET programs also have a range of assessment styles, which can include tests, but there are no exams (unless a student wishes to undertake one for ATAR purposes). Assessment in VCE units being studied as part of a VCAL course is the same as for any VCE subject, ie both school-assessed and exam.
VCAL is a useful alternative for students who are considering moving on to TAFE, doing an apprenticeship or getting a job after competing school.
